about

St Agnes church has many stories to tell: memorials to those lost at sea; tales of shipwreck; details of rescues performed by the old lifeboat station a stone’s throw away; above all, a pervading sense of the bravery, selflessness and vulnerability of an isolated island community whose proximity to the sea has often meant the difference between life and death. The music on this CD is a response to this resonant island building: several of the tracks were written for school nativities performed in the church; two tracks (1 and 6 ) were commissioned to celebrate the dedication of Oriel Hicks’s beautiful stained glass window; the rest have been inspired, over the years, by an extraordinary place and the endless sea surrounding it.
